Korean Dog

October 6, 2008

Do Korean's really eat their pets? - Well, no. Not quite. Some Korean's still consider dog-meat a delicacy, but not just any dog. Specifically, the nureongi dog is raised for the purpose of consumption. But this stems from a culture rooted in antiquity. You may find yourself imagining a Korean chasing down dogs in the street to throw them on the BBQ? No.

In time of extreme poverty, the ancient Korean's were forced to look for alternative sources of food. In times when neither money nor harvest would suffice for survival, Korean's turned to dog meat for their nutrition. Out of this necessity they believed that dog-meat actually contains huge amounts of important nutrition and gives you some form of super-power. As such it is still consumed as a delicacy, but not often offered to foreigners. It is likely that many Korean's have tried it, but only a few would consider it a regular treat!
