SUPERMAN? - Okay, you know there is a difference between the internet and the world wide web, right? Sure. Well, it was Leonard Kleinrock who first started working with data networks, learning how to transfer information in packets across a network. That became the basis for the technology that led to the internet as well as the the web. But the real beginning came from Kleinrock stumbling across an inspiring Superman comic when he was just six years old. Hmmmmm. Is that enough of a connection? Is it a stretch to say that superman was the catalyst in the development of the internet? Well, don't you think it was foreseen in the scene where he basically tied the world back together by flying around the globe really fast, creating an effect that looks a lot like a world wide web?

ARPANET - It was the US military, or more specifically, ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) that found use for this technology far earlier than any commercial use of the internet was commissioned. By the mid 1960's the government was investing in the beginnings of internet technology. It wasn't released to the public until 1992.

THE WEB - Who invented the web? On 25 December 1990 Tim Berners-Lee implemented the first successful communication between an HTTP client and server via the Internet with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student staff at CERN. He was ranked Joint First in The Telegraph's list of 100 greatest living geniuses. He created the language called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) which allows different computers, connected to a network, to view data displayed in the same way through browsers.

Probably the biggest part of his incredible contribution, is that he designed the web as an 'open source' platform, which has allowed the incredible speed and breadth of creative development of the world wide web. Thanks Tim. You are a hero.

HTML - Or Hyper Text Markup Language is the lingua franca for publishing hypertext on the World Wide Web. It is a non-proprietary format based upon SGML, and can be created and processed by a wide range of tools, from simple plain text editors - you type it in from scratch - to sophisticated WYSIWYG authoring tools. XHTML - Or XHTML is a family of current and future document types and modules that reproduce, subset, and extend HTML 4 [HTML4]. XHTML family document types are XML based, and ultimately are designed to work in conjunction with XML-based user agents. The details of this family and its evolution are discussed in more detail in [XHTMLMOD]. (source: w3.org)
